May is Rhododendron Season!

Not only are rhododendrons an integral part of our culture, but they also hold international fame. Songs and poems are inspired by the breathtaking rhododendron forests in Napal and China.

Sadly, rhododendrons are such hard workers that we often neglect them allowing scraggly or overly dense growth. A little love and attention goes a long way in optimizing your rhododendron's vibrancy.

Caring for Rhododendrons

  • Water: Shallow fibrous roots are vulnerable to drought and should be irrigated during the hottest parts of summer. Too little or too much water is equally detrimental to root health.  Often soil appears wet, but the water has not penetrated the surface. Digging a four-inch hole will give you a better idea of the soil's moisture level. Summertime watering is crucial to ensure resiliency during our 100-degree heat waves.

  •  Mulch: A three-inch layer of organic mulch goes a long way in regulating your soil's temperature and suppressing weeds. Avoid treated mulch that sheds water and smothers the soil.

  • Fertilizing: Blooming requires a lot of energy that should be replaced with a slow-release fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants. Fertilizer provides nutrition needed for lush foliage and bud development resulting in better blooms.

  •  Pruning: Finally, correct pruning is a vital part of plant health.  Create a strong structure by Removing weak or crossing branches. Thin congested areas for improved air circulation. Rhododendrons should be pruned just above a growth bud.  Do not leave short branch stubs which will die and can become an entry point for disease.

According to Robert L Funis It is a myth that rhododendrons should not be pruned. The rhododendrons will appreciate the attention and respond to it.
